Our Vision

What Empower planned to do

EMPOWER is a European interdisciplinary research project that developed and deployed a unique technological learning platform to enhance the personalized education of children with neurodevelopmental conditions.

Its main objective was to empower teachers to better support children in schools regarding their emotional and behavioural difficulties and ultimately improve their quality of life.

Insights Overview

  • Neurodevelopmental conditions affect approximately 15% of children aged 3 to 17 years.

These children can have difficulties with language and speech, motor skills, behaviour, memory, learning, or other neurological functions.

  • These difficulties can have a significant impact on their learning, access to education, and in turn social inclusion.

Children with Neurodevelopmental conditions can thus greatly benefit from education support tailored to their needs.

Over 3 years

2022 - 2025

The program involved a range of activities, including training sessions for teachers, research and development of new resources, and ongoing support and collaboration among partners to ensure the success of the project.

Over the course of three years, EMPOWER contributed to answering these questions by:

  • (1) developing novel technological support for the education of children with neurodevelopmental conditions.

  • (2) developing adequate training for educational staff

  • (3) issuing recommendations for the future regarding the potential and limitations of technology-augmented education to inform future developments

EMPOWER thus created a novel educational platform based on new paradigms from psychology that suggest that Executive Function and Emotional Self-Regulation are two key sets of skills to target in the educational support for students with Neurodevelopmental conditions.

The educational platform was co-created by all relevant stakeholders and will facilitate the improvement of these key skills in children.

It is expected that by using a game-based approach, children will improve their learning and emotional skills, better integrate into the educational system, and improve their quality of life. The platform efficacy has been tested and evaluated in school settings according to the strict standards of a randomized clinical trial.

2

Apps developed

Key milestones achieved include:

  • 3 Different countries for validation studies :

Our solutions were rigorously tested across three countries, ensuring cross-cultural relevance and scientific credibility. These international validation studies provided valuable insights into how children in different educational and social contexts engage with our tools, helping us refine and optimize the experience for global impact.

  • 150 children involved in validation studies:

Over 150 children participated in our validation study, offering real-world data on engagement, learning outcomes, and usability. Their feedback and performance metrics guided key design improvements, making our products both evidence-based and child-centered.

  • 10 games developed:

We’ve developed 10 interactive games designed to support learning and cognitive development. Each game combines fun, science, and accessibility creating meaningful digital experiences that motivate children to explore, learn, and grow.

  • 2 apps:

Our two apps integrate these games into easy-to-use, research-backed platforms. Built for both educators and families, they provide practical tools for learning and assessment, bridging the gap between play and measurable developmental progress.

Teachers App - used to retrieve game data during live-gameplay
Smart Watch App - used to closely observe and retrieve biometric data during live-gameplay

Training Materials

  • these Smart Training materials were created in both static format and audio covered webinar style to assist teachers.

Goal here was to ease-in anyone who would test the platform/ games/ apps by using these Step-By-Step guidelines.

They were first addressed in English and further translated into 4 more languages.
